Hivemind: Chapter 5: The Stallion in the Hourglass
The pony standing in the remains of the broken hourglass cut an imposing sight. Stars bedecked the deep blue of his robes and hat, calling to mind the clear night sky, and light glistened off the bells sewn onto their edges. A stately white beard trailed down his chin almost to his hooves, and the wrinkles around his sparkling eyes spoke of a lifetime of knowledge and experience. He leaped down to the floor below, surprisingly sprightly for his advanced age, and addressed the still-dumbstruck ponies.

“Well, then, if nopony knows what year it is, let me ask something a little more direct. Which one of you summoned me here?”

“Let down some more rope.”

“That's all there is, Applejack,” Rarity called down to her friend.

Applejack scowled. She balanced halfway down the rain-slick side of the cliff, her lasso tied securely around her waist as a safety line.

“You know, you've climbed down this cliff before without a rope. I'm sure you don't need--”

“Consarnit, Rarity, that was when it wasn't raining, and we've lost three ponies already. I am not taking any more chances.”

Rarity bit her tongue.

“Now, go ask Fluttershy to look for some creepers to tie onto the rope to make it longer.”

“O-okay. Flut

:iconfluttershyisshyplz:Is that okay? I know you wanted background ponies, but Hasbro's design in general felt kind of stand-out-ish in the way they used Rarity as a model. I think a lot of it is the color scheme, though, so a recolor should work better in the background.

Well, you shouldn't really be taking the molds of the ponies (Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, etc.) into account, as they're really just used for other ponies as a way of saving costs. The other ponies aren't really meant to look that way--for example, some ponies that have appeared in both blind bag and Playful Pony form, such as Twinkleshine, Snowcatcher, and Dewdrop Dazzle, have their art switched between Twilight Sparkle and Rarity in each form. I believe that's so the customers don't get too attached to thinking of those ponies as strictly Twilight or Rarity recolors; they're supposed to use their imagination.

So yeah.

You're probably right. I did try to make the mane as different as possible from Rarity's (especially since Rarity and Twilight both have rather flat manes, so the box art doesn't really indicate much about how a unicorn would look), but I still felt she should be fancy. I guess I'm better at designing how a pony looks from their personality rather than vice versa; even my OC's have had their mane styles updated several times after I figured out their basic personalities.

The strange thing is that these background ponies you've been designing seem to have more intricate-looking mane styles than your main characters. :O_o:

But anyway, it still doesn't look bad. You're probably right about the colors; they do make the hair stand out more than it would if it was just a single color, or even just two colors. It's something that can be polished out later.

Anyway, keep up the good work! Only Lucky Swirl left to go!
